Abstract
The tibial condylar fractures involving the articular surface of the proximal tibia is very common in traffic accident and can produce disabilities of the knee joint because it is frequently accompanied by injuries to ligaments and menisci.
In the operative treatement, the accurate anatomical reduction and the rigid internal fixation with the early motion of the knee joint are known to decrease the functional derangement of the knee joint.
The authors analyzed 65 cases of the tibial condylar fractures treated at Inje Universityp Seoul paik Hospital from january 1987 to December 1990.
1. All 65 cases were classified according to Schatzker and the most common type is type VI tibial plateau fractures with dissociation of the tibial metaphysis and diaphysis, 21 cases (32.5%).
2. associated injuries are fibular fractures 12 cases (21.5%), ligament injuries 14 cases (21.5%), tibial shaft & distal tibial fractures 8 cases(12.5%), and others.
3. 47 cases(72.5%) were treated by the operative method and 18 cases(27.5%) were treated by the conservative method.
4. 13 cases(72%) of the conservative treated cases and 31 cases(66%) of the operative treated cases revealed the rating of "Acceptable" group according to Porter's criteria.
5. It is considered that satisfying results can be obtained by conservative measures in undisplaced type I fractures, but most other types of fractures should be treated by operative measures to obtain satisfying results.
